Bitches

I've had many conversations lately about rape not being ok. And about how violence is not ok. And about how society is dismissive of women who have an opinion, especially if that opinion is one that involves thinking women are people who deserve a fair shot too. About how lesbians don't understand abuse because they don't understand men. And how women don't have a right to complain about mistreatment because it's not that bad. About how society tells men to be strong and powerful, and tells women to be emotional and caring and helpful and smiley. How society blames women for allowing men to feel strong and powerful, and also blames women for being emotional and bitchy and needy and weak and moody. Women are supposed to fix the problem, which makes sense since we've caused the problem in the first place.

While having these conversations, we cannot be mad -- it means we are bitchy. We can't be emotional -- it means we are unstable. We can't be civil -- if so, we are obviously bringing up a point that doesn't REALLY matter. If we disagree with rape it is because we have been raped. If we disagree with the language applied to women it is because we are FEMINISTS (insert negativity here).

I came across this quote today on my friends away message...

I myself have never been able to find out precisely what feminism is: I only know that people call me a feminist whenever I express sentiments that differentiate me from a doormat. -Rebecca West
